  • Lesson 3.4.11 Pavāraṇākkhandhako – Invitation to Openness!

The virtue of suvaco describes a person who graciously accepts advice and criticism, viewing it as well-intended, valuable guidance rather than becoming upset. Suvaco, often translated as meek, gentle, or obedient, is highlighted in a Dhammapada verse that opens the Introduction of this lesson, emphasizing humble compliance. The commentaries explain that the one pointing out faults (vajjadassi) should do so with the genuine intention to help correct an unnoticed error, not out of a desire to find something wrong (randhagavesako). Conversely, the person being criticized should respond not with anger (kopaṃ na karoti), but with gratefulness (pamudito eva hoti), as if a great treasure has been revealed. This mutual understanding and attitude form the foundation for the practise of the regular assembly of the Pavāraṇā.
