Lesson 3.4.10 Mahācattārīsakasuttaṃ, Part Three – Discerning Wrong Speech and Developing Right Speech
For today's practitioner of the Buddha’s path, it's important to remember we're living in the second half of the sāsana, meaning while we're fortunate to have found the path, it's wise to moderate expectations of achieving liberation in this very life to avoid disappointment. The Buddha emphasized "accepting reality as it is," so working diligently from our current foundation will ensure progress. By earnestly incorporating all components of the Eightfold Path to the best of our ability, our efforts won't be wasted. Considering the Buddha's recognition of four types of beings after his enlightenment, we can honestly assess whether we're among those who can rise above defilements or those who need extended teaching to grasp the Dhamma in this life but will achieve full realization in future existences. The Mahācattārīsakasutta affirms that no effort on the path is futile; even if we can't fully perfect our qualities, we can confidently assert: "I am surely cultivating the path, even if still influenced by dormant impurities, I am gaining assurance for my ascertained progress in future times to come."
