Lesson 3.6.13 Sārandadasuttaṃ – How to Live in Harmony and True Democracy
The Buddha was a unique teacher who not only guided individuals toward inner peace and liberation by helping them understand and overcome their defilements, but also provided teachings for promoting social harmony and welfare. His compassionate concern extended to all of society, as he also taught principles for fair governance, democratic standards, and the removal of social divisions. The Buddha stressed that a king's highest duty was to support and ensure the well-being of his subjects. He warned that when a government neglects its citizens' basic needs, moral standards decline and vices increase. However, he seemed to favor a democratic form of governance over royal administration, as long as it was based on seven principles he advised to the Vajjians. The Sārandadasutta highlights these principles, suggesting they are an ideal model for "true democracy" where all subjects are involved in decision-making and administration.
