Lesson 3.6.8 Maṅgalasuttaṃ – The Householder’s Wholesome Blessings
The Maṅgalasutta is one of the well-known, most recited suttas of the Tipiṭaka. A maṅgalaṃ is a ‘blessing’, ‘good omen’ or ‘auspice’. In the sutta, the Buddha outlines thirty-eight maṅgalas for a householder seeking a good and harmonious life. Known as the "positive" counterpart or "twin sutta" to the Parābhavasutta, which focuses on vices, this sutta offers a systematic path to well-being and prosperity. It begins with the good fortune of living in an area where one can practise Dhamma and associate with morally upright people. The blessings then progress to the importance of supporting those close to you and practising generosity based on honestly earned income. This leads to cultivating qualities like humility, respect, and a keen interest in spiritual questions and in receiving proper answers to those questions. The final blessings are about living a pure life that can lead to spiritual attainments and the realization of the Four Noble Truths. The Introduction to this lesson provides a ‘historical’ account that led to the gods asking this question to the Buddha.
