Lesson 3.4.8 Vivādasuttaṃ – How Quarrel Arises
The Vivādasutta's title combines the prefix vi (meaning separation or intensification) with the noun vāda (speaking), resulting in vivāda, which translates to "dispute, contention, quarrel, or struggle". The Buddha frequently discussed the origins and negative consequences of disputes, highlighting how they typically perpetuate disagreement rather than fostering harmony. Disputes are not limited to the secular world; they also occur in monastic settings, as illustrated in this sutta, originating from the ‘section of ten’ in the Aṅguttaranikāya.
