The extract from the Vibhaṅgasutta defines precisely the four characteristics of Sammāvāyāmo: 1. To prevent the arising of unarisen evil unwholesome mental states. 2. To eradicate evil unwholesome mental states. 3. To develop unarisen wholesome mental states. 4. To maintain and increase arisen wholesome mental states. The introduction highlights the three main terminologies used in Pāli when endeavour, effort, perseverance and striving is discussed: vīriya, vāyāmo and padhāna.
