  • Lesson 3.5.11 Mahākammavibhaṅgasuttaṃ – Kamma and Its Significance for Future Existence

The title Mahākammavibhaṅgasutta: Kamma and Its Significance for Future Existence suggests that a person has some understanding of kammasakatā sammadiṭṭhi—the discernment that one is not merely a victim of fate but is responsible for their own actions and their results. The Buddha, in speaking to Anāthapiṇḍika, pointed out that it is unwise to judge one's destiny based on their current state of health, wealth, or appearance. While the world may seem unjust and the laws of kamma are not always immediately or linearly apparent, the Buddha confirms that the results of all actions will eventually manifest. However, he also emphasizes that kamma is not deterministic; one can influence the the impact and outcome of past deeds through regret, change of volition, development of morality (sīla) and right understanding (sammā diṭṭhi).
