Usage of Cases
Vocative case

The vocative case is used for addressing purpose. Hence it appears quite frequently in a conversation.

Please remember the vocative forms of the noun ‘buddha’ :

Singular
buddhabuddhā
(O Buddha!)

Plural
buddhā
(O Buddhas!)

Thus, in a conversation / dialogue,

  • dāraka = O child!
  • mitta = O friend!
  • puttā = O sons!
  • upāsakā = O lay devotees!
  • rāhula = O Rahula!
