How Quarrel Arises

Vivādasuttaṃ How Quarrel Arises

Atha kho āyasmā upāli yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami.

Then Venerable Upāli went to the Bhagavā.

Upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi.

Having gone there and paying respect to the Bhagavā, he sat at one side.

Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā upāli bhagavantaṃ etadavoca:

Sitting at one side, Venerable Upāli spoke to the Bhagavā thus:

“Ko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena saṅghe bhaṇḍanakalahaviggahavivādā uppajjanti, bhikkhū ca na phāsu viharantī”ti?

“Bhante! What is the cause, what is the reason that there arise in the Order quarrels, disputes, strife and controversies and the Bhikkhus do not live in comfort?”

“Idhupāli, bhikkhū adhammaṃ dhammoti dīpenti, dhammaṃ adhammoti dīpenti,

“Here, Upāli, monks declare non-Dhamma as Dhamma, declare Dhamma as non-Dhamma,

avinayaṃ vinayoti dīpenti,

vinayaṃ avinayoti dīpenti,

declare non-Discipline as Discipline,

declare Discipline as non-Discipline,

abhāsitaṃ alapitaṃ tathāgatena

bhāsitaṃ lapitaṃ tathāgatenāti dīpenti,

they declare what is not said or spoken by the Tathāgata as said or spoken by the Tathāgata,

bhāsitaṃ lapitaṃ tathāgatena

abhāsitaṃ alapitaṃ tathāgatenāti dīpenti,

they declare what is said or spoken by the Tathāgata as not said or spoken by the Tathāgata,

anāciṇṇaṃ tathāgatena āciṇṇaṃ tathāgatenāti dīpenti,

āciṇṇaṃ tathāgatena anāciṇṇaṃ tathāgatenāti dīpenti,

they declare what is not practiced by the Tathāgata as practiced by the Tathāgata,

they declare what is practiced by the Tathāgata as not practiced by the Tathāgata,

apaññattaṃ tathāgatena paññattaṃ tathāgatenāti dīpenti,

paññattaṃ tathāgatena apaññattaṃ tathāgatenāti dīpenti.

they declare what is not announced by the Tathāgata as announced by the Tathāgata,

they declare what is announced by the Tathāgata as not announced by the Tathāgata.

Ayaṃ kho, upāli, hetu ayaṃ paccayo, yena saṅghe bhaṇḍanakalahaviggahavivādā uppajjanti, bhikkhū ca na phāsu viharantī”ti.

This, indeed, Upāli, is the cause, is the reason why in the Order quarrels, dispute, strife and controversies arise and Bhikkhus do not live in comfort.”
