Sammākammanto Right Actions

Idha socati pecca socati,

pāpakārī ubhayattha socati;

He grieves here, he laments hereafter,

An evildoer grieves in both places;

so socati so vihaññati,

disvā kammakiliṭṭhamattano.

He laments being afflicted,

Seeing his own evil deeds.

Idha modati pecca modati,

katapuñño ubhayattha modati.

He rejoices here, he delights hereafter,

A performer of wholesome deeds rejoices in both places.

so modati so pamodati,

disvā kammavisuddhimattano.

He delights, he is thrilled,

Recognizing the purity of his own deeds.

Idha tappati pecca tappati,

pāpakārī ubhayattha tappati;

He suffers here, he endures hereafter,

An evildoer suffers in both places;

“pāpaṃ me katan”ti tappati,

bhiyyo tappati duggatiṃ gato.

“Unwholesome deeds have been done by me”

thus he suffers,

He suffers still further, having gone to a woeful state.

Idha nandati pecca nandati,

katapuñño ubhayattha nandati;

He enjoys here, he enjoys hereafter,

A performer of wholesome deeds enjoys both places;

“puññaṃ me katan”ti nandati,

bhiyyo nandati suggatiṃ gato.

“Wholesome deeds have been done by me”

thus he rejoices,

He enjoys still further having gone to a blissful state.
