The Consequences of Wrong Speech

Musāvādasuttaṃ The Consequences of Wrong Speech

“Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā,

vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ.

“This was said by the Bhagavā, this was said by the Arahat and heard by me.

‘Ekadhammaṃ atītassa, bhikkhave, purisapuggalassa nāhaṃ tassa kiñci pāpakammaṃ akaraṇīyanti vadāmi.

‘That person, Bhikkhus, who transgresses this one thing there is I dare say no evil deed whatsoever he would not perform.

Katamaṃ ekadhammaṃ?

What is this one thing?

Yadidaṃ bhikkhave, sampajānamusāvādo’ti.

This, Bhikkhus, is telling a lie consciously.’

Etamatthaṃ bhagavā avoca.

This matter has been explained by the Bhagavā.

Tatthetaṃ iti vuccati:

In connection with this he said:

‘Ekadhammaṃ atītassa,
musāvādissa jantuno,

‘For a person who speaks falsehood and
transgresses in this one thing,

vitiṇṇaparalokassa,
natthi pāpaṃ akāriyan’ti.

He thus gives up concern for the world beyond,
There does not exist an evil deed he might not perform.’

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.”

This has been said by the Bhagavā, this has been heard by me.”
