'Rūpāvacaracittāni, Arūpāvacaracittāni, Lokuttaracittāni’
- States of Consciousness

a) Pannarasa rūpāvacarakusalavipākakiriyacittāni - Fifteen types of wholesome, resultant and functional fine sense-sphere consciousness

Imāni pañcapi rūpāvacarakusalacittāni nāma These are the five types of wholesome fine sense-sphere consciousness

Vitakkavicārapītisukhekaggatāsahitaṃ paṭhamajjhānakusalacittaṃ,

First jhāna wholesome consciousness accompanied by initial and sustained application of the mind and filled with delight and happiness and one-pointedness,

vicārapītisukhekaggatāsahitaṃ dutiyajjhānakusalacittaṃ,

second jhāna wholesome consciousness accompanied by sustained application of the mind and filled with delight and happiness and one-pointedness.

pītisukhekaggatāsahitaṃ tatiyajjhānakusalacittaṃ,

third jhāna wholesome consciousness accompanied by delight and happiness and one-pointedness,

sukhekaggatāsahitaṃ catutthajjhānakusalacittaṃ,

fourth jhāna wholesome consciousness accompanied by happiness and one-pointedness.

upekkhekaggatāsahitaṃ pañcamajjhānakusalacittaṃ,

And fifth jhana wholesome consciousness accompanied by equanimity and one-pointedness.

 

b) Dvādasa arūpāvacarakusalavipākakiriyacittāni - Twelve types of wholesome, resultant and functional immaterial-sphere consciousness

Imāni aṭṭhapi sahetukakāmāvacaravipākacittāni nāma These are the eight types of wholesome sense-sphere resultant consciousness with roots

Imāni cattāripi arūpāvacarakusalacittāni nāma

 

These are the four types of wholesome fine sense-sphere consciousness

Ākāsānañcāyatanakusalacittaṃ,

Wholesome consciousness connected to the sphere of infinite space,

viññāṇañcāyatanakusalacittaṃ,

Wholesome consciousness connected to the sphere of infinite consciousness,

ākiñcaññāyatanakusalacittaṃ,

Wholesome consciousness connected to the sphere of nothingness,

nevasaññānāsaññāyatanakusalacittaṃ.

Wholesome consciousness connected to the sphere of neither-perception-or-non-perception.


These four states of wholesome immaterial consciousness (categorized by way of object) become likewise twelve when they are further divided into those that are meritorious, resultant and those that are functional:

Ālambaṇappabhedena, catudhāruppamānasaṃ.

Puññapākakriyābhedā, puna dvādasadhā ṭhitaṃ.

 

c) Aṭṭha lokuttarakusalavipākacittāni - Eight types of wholesome and resultant supramundane consciousness

Imāni cattāripi lokuttarakusalacittāni nāma These are the four types of wholesome supramundane consciousness

Sotāpattimaggacittaṃ,

Path-consciousness of stream-entry,

sakadāgāmimaggacittaṃ,

Path-consciousness of once-returning,

anāgāmimaggacittaṃ,

Path-consciousness of non-returning,

arahattamaggacittaṃ.

Path-consciousness of Arahantship.

Imāni cattāripi lokuttaravipākacittāni nāma These are the four types of resultant supramundane consciousness

Sotāpattiphalacittaṃ,

Fruition-consciousness of stream-entry,

sakadāgāmiphalacittaṃ,

Fruition-consciousness of once-returning,

anāgāmiphalacittaṃ,

Fruition-consciousness of non-returning,

arahattaphalacittaṃ.

Fruition-consciousness of Arahantship.


These four states of supramundane consciousness are twofold when considering the wholesome path-achievements and the fruition-resultants. So in all there are eight types of wholesome and resultant supramundane consciousness:

Iccevaṃ sabbathāpi aṭṭha lokuttarakusalavipākacittāni samattāni.
