Abhidhammapiṭake, Paṭṭhānapāḷi, Kusalattikaṃ, Tikapaṭṭhānaṃ, Paccayānulomaṃ, Paṭiccavāro

1. The wholesome sate may refer to one of the wholesome roots: alobha, adosa, amoha

2. khandhā here refers to the four mental aggregates: vedanā, saññā, saṅkhārā, viññāṇaṃ. Thus, dependent on one khandha (saññā) the three others (vedanā, saṅkhārā, viññāṇaṃ) may arise.

3. No unwholesome phenomenon can arise from a wholesome state as they exclude one another – so no reply is possible. This will be indicated by _ _ _.

4. The number in brackets (3) refers to the number of the possibly arising phenomena. Thus, the enquiry in the Kusalapada allows three phenomena to arise.

5. Here it may refer to one of the unwholesome roots: lobha, dosa, moha.

6. Thus, in the Akusalapada likewise three phenomena arise.

7. kaṭattā: katassa bhāvena – ‘through having done’ refers to wholesome or unwholesome kamma that has not produced its result. It is translated as ‘reserve kamma’ as it lies dormant and becomes operative when no more effective kamma occurs.

8. Here vatthu refers to the heart-base (hadaya vatthu).

9. The Abyākatapadaallows only one result.

10. The Kusalābyākatapadahas likewise only one result.

11. … indicates that the same order of questions should be followed.

12. There is again one result in the Akusalābyākatapada.

13. There is no result in the Kusalākusalapada.

14. Likewise no result in the Kusalākusalābyākatapada.

15. vitthārito: vitthāreti (pp.) – expand, explain.
