Phussattheragāthā 2500 Years Are Over!
The Clock of Vipassana Has Struck!
Make Use of This Rare Opportunity!

‘‘Kodhanā upanāhī ca,
makkhī thambhī saṭhā bahū;
Ussukī nānāvādā ca,
bhavissanti anāgate.

‘‘Filled with anger, full of grudge,
hypocritical, obdurate, and treacherous,
Envious and bickerers, of such character
Will be many in future times.

Aññātamānino dhamme,
gambhīre tīragocarā;
Lahukā agaru dhamme,
aññamaññamagāravā.

Proud of their knowledge of the Dhamma
which is subtle and deep,
While staying just on the edge,
They are superficial and without esteem
Towards the Dhamma and without respect
Towards one another.

Bahū ādīnavā loke,
uppajjissantyanāgate;
Sudesitaṃ imaṃ dhammaṃ,
kilesessanti dummatī.

Many dangers will arise in future times;
And the Dhamma,
So well exposed
Will be spoiled by the foolish.

Anikkasāvo kāsāvaṃ,
yo vatthaṃ paridhassati;
Apeto damasaccena,
na so kāsāvamarahati.

The impure one
will put on the yellow robe,
Lacking self-control and untruthful,
One is unworthy of the yellow robe.

Yo ca vantakāsāvassa,
sīlesu susamāhito;
Upeto damasaccena,
sa ve kāsāvamarahati.

But one who drives out impurities,
Well focused in sīla,
Established in self-control and truthful,
Such a one deserves the yellow robe.

Vipannasīlo dummedho,
pākaṭo kāmakāriyo;
Vibbhantacitto nissukko,
na so kāsāvamarahati.

Lacking sīla, foolish,
Unrestrained, acting defiantly,
With uncontrolled mind and impure,
One is unworthy of the yellow robe.

Yo ca sīlena sampanno,
vītarāgo samāhito;
Odātamanasaṅkappo,
sa ve kāsāvamarahati.

Established in Sīla
Rid of cravings, with well concentrated mind
of pure intentions,
Such a one deserves the yellow robe.

Evaṃ anāgataddhānaṃ,
paṭipatti bhavissati;
Bhikkhūnaṃ bhikkhunīnañca,
patte kālamhi pacchime.

Such in future times will develop,
The conduct of the Bhikkhus
and Bhikkhunis,
When the last time is reached.

Purā āgacchate etaṃ,
anāgataṃ mahabbhayaṃ;
Subbacā hotha sakhilā,
aññamaññaṃ sagāravā.

Before this very fearful future time
Will arrive, behave yourselves,
With pleasant speech, congenial
And full of respect for each other.

Mettacittā kāruṇikā,
hotha sīlesu saṃvutā;
Āraddhavīriyā pahitattā,
niccaṃ daḷhaparakkamā.

Dwell submerged with metta in your minds,
Compassionate, keep your sīla well protected,
Put forth energy,
Resolute, always maintain strong effort.

Pamādaṃ bhayato disvā,
appamādañca khemato;
Bhāvethaṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ,
phusantā amataṃ pada’’nti.

Understanding indolence as fearful and
vigilance as rest from exertion,
Develop the Eightfold Path, to attain the
deathless state.’’
