2.1.6 Cintīsuttaṃ - The Characteristics of Foolish and Wise People
Cintīsuttaṃ | The Characteristics of Foolish and Wise People |
---|---|
“Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, bālassa bālalakkhaṇāni bālanimittāni bālāpadānāni. | “There are, Bhikkhus, three marks, three signs and three characteristics of a foolish person. |
Katamāni tīṇi? Idha, bhikkhave, bāloduccintitacintī ca hoti dubbhāsitabhāsī ca dukkaṭakammakārī ca. |
Which three? Such a fool, Bhikkhus, thinks thoughts, speaks words and performs actions that are wrong. |
No cedaṃ, bhikkhave, bālo duccintitacintī ca abhavissa dubbhāsitabhāsī ca dukkaṭakammakārī ca, kena naṃ paṇḍitā jāneyyuṃ: |
Were it not so, Bhikkhus, that a foolish person thinks thoughts, speaks words and performs actions that are wrong, how would a wise person be able to know: |
Bālo ayaṃ bhavaṃ asappuriso’ti? Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, bālo duccintitacintī ca hoti dubbhāsitabhāsī ca dukkaṭakammakārī ca, |
This is a foolish person, an unworthy person? But because, Bhikkhus, a foolish person thinks thoughts, speaks words and performs actions that are wrong, |
tasmā naṃ paṇḍitā jānanti– ‘bālo ayaṃ bhavaṃ asappuriso’ti. |
therefore a wise person knows: ‘this is a foolish person, an unworthy person!’ |
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi bālassa bālalakkhaṇāni bālanimittāni bālāpadānāni. | These are, Bhikkhus, the three marks, three signs and three characteristics of a foolish person. |
Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, paṇḍitassa paṇḍitalakkhaṇāni paṇḍitanimittāni paṇḍitāpadānāni. | There are, Bhikkhus, three marks, three signs and three characteristics of a wise person. |
Katamāni tīṇi? Idha, bhikkhave, paṇḍito sucintitacintī ca hoti subhāsitabhāsī ca sukatakammakārī ca. |
Which three? Such a wise person, Bhikkhus, thinks thoughts, speaks words and performs actions that are right. |
No cedaṃ, bhikkhave, paṇḍito sucintitacintī ca abhavissa subhāsitabhāsī ca sukatakammakārī ca, kena naṃ paṇḍitā jāneyyuṃ: |
Were it not so, Bhikkhus that wise person thinks thoughts, speaks words and performs actions that are right, how would a wise person be able to know: |
‘paṇḍito ayaṃ bhavaṃ sappuriso’ti? | ‘This is a wise person, a worthy person’? |
Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, paṇḍito sucintitacintī ca hoti subhāsitabhāsī ca sukatakammakārī ca tasmā naṃ paṇḍitā jānanti: | But because, Bhikkhus, a wise person thinks thoughts, speaks words and performs actions that are right, therefore a wise person knows: |
‘paṇḍito ayaṃ bhavaṃ sappuriso’ti. | ‘this is a wise person, a worthy person!’ |
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi paṇḍitassa paṇḍitalakkhaṇāni paṇḍitanimittāni paṇḍitāpadānāni. | These are, Bhikkhus, the three marks, three signs and three characteristics of a wise person. |
Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘idaṃ dukkhan’ti yogo karaṇīyo ‘ayaṃ dukkhasamudayo’ti yogo karaṇīyo, ‘ayaṃ dukkhanirodho’ti yogo karaṇīyo, ‘ayaṃ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yogo karaṇīyo”ti. |
Therefore, Bhikkhus, make it your obligation to practice
each: ‘this is suffering’ ‘this is the arising of suffering’ ‘this is the eradication of suffering’ ‘this is the path that leads to the eradication of suffering’.” |
