1.3.2 The Hither and the Farther Shore*

“I will teach you, Bhikkhus, about the hither shore and the further shore.

Therefore, listen attentively with alert mind. I will teach you.”

“Well, Bhante!” the Bhikkhus replied to the Bhagavā. The Bhagavā spoke thus:

“What, Bhikkhus, is the hither shore and what is the further shore?

Wrong view is the hither shore; right view is the further shore.

Wrong thought is the hither shore; right thought is the further shore.

Wrong speech is the hither shore; right speech is the further shore.

Wrong action is the hither shore; right action is the further shore.

Wrong livelihood is the hither shore; right livelihood is the further shore.

Wrong effort is the hither shore; right effort is the further shore.

Wrong awareness is the hither shore; right awareness is the further shore.

Wrong concentration is the hither shore; right concentration is the further shore.

Wrong knowledge is the hither shore; right knowledge is the further shore.

Wrong liberation is the hither shore; right liberation is the further shore.

This, Bhikkhus, is the hither shore, that is the further shore.”

“So few are there amongst human beings to go beyond the further shore,

Their mental defilements stand destroyed, resplendent in this world are they,

the Liberated Ones.”
