Verbs in Present Tense
Introduction to Pali Sentences
Verbs in Present Tense
bhāsati = speaks
Singular | Plural | |
---|---|---|
Third Person | bhāsati | bhāsanti |
Second Person | bhāsasi | bhāsatha |
First Person | bhāsāmi | bhāsāma |
Please Note : The vowel ‘a’ before the termination ‘mi’ and ‘ma’ (first person) gets lengthened into ‘ā’. Hence the first person forms of the verb are bhāsāmi and bhāsāma.
On account of the subject-verb agreement, a third person singular subject pairs with a third person singular verb, second person plural subject goes with a second person plural verb and so on.
Based on the above words and considering subject-verb agreement, we can make some simple Pali sentences like :
- So / Sā bhāsati = He / She speaks.
- Te bhāsanti = They speak
- Tvaṃ bhāsasi = You (singular) speak.
- Tumhe bhāsatha = You (plural) speak.
- Ahaṃ bhāsāmi = I speak.
- Mayaṃ bhāsāma = We speak.
Please note the terminations added to bhāsa in the above table. These terminations are specific to the Present Tense and are applicable to all the verbs.
