1.3.9 Saṅghabhedasuttaṃ - The Schism in the Saṅgha
Saṅghabhedasuttaṃ | The Schism in the Saṅgha |
---|---|
Evaṃ me sutaṃ. | Thus has been heard by me. |
Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. | At one time the Bhagavā was staying near Rājagiri at the bamboo forest at Kalandakanivāpe. |
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā ānando tadahuposathe pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi. | At that time the Venerable Ānanda, it being the day of Uposatha, dressed himself in the morning with the upper robe, took his bowl and went to Rājagiri for alms. |
Addasā kho devadatto āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ rājagahe piṇḍāya carantaṃ. | Devadatta saw the Venerable Ānanda walking in Rājagiri for alms. |
Disvāna yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkami; | Having seen the Venerable Ānanda he approached him. |
upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṃ ānandaṃ etadavoca: | Having approached him he addressed the Venerable Ānanda thus: |
“ajjatagge dānāhaṃ, āvuso ānanda, aññatreva bhagavatā aññatra bhikkhusaṅghā uposathaṃ karissāmi saṅghakammāni cā”ti. | “Friend Ānanda, from today onwards irrespective of the Bhagavā and irrespective of the Order of the Bhagavā I will perform my own Uposatha and I will foster my own Order.” |
Atha kho āyasmā ānando rājagahe piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, | Then the Venerable Ānanda having finished his alms round, took his meal and on returning from his alms round approached the Bhagavā. |
upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi. | Having approached the Bhagavā he greeted him and sat down to one side. |
Ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṃ etadavoca: | Having sat down at one side the Venerable Ānando addressed the Bhagavā thus: |
“Idhāhaṃ, bhante, pubbaṇhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṃ piṇḍāya pāvisi. | “Today, Bhante, I dressed myself in the morning taking upper robe and bowl and went to Rājagiri for alms. |
Addasā kho maṃ, bhante, devadatto rājagahe piṇḍāya carantaṃ. | Then, Bhante, Devadatta saw me walking for alms in Rājagiri. |
Disvāna yenāhaṃ tenupasaṅkami. | Having seen me he approached me. |
Upasaṅkamitvā maṃ etadavoca: | Having approached me he spoke thus to me: |
“Ajjatagge dānāhaṃ, āvuso ānanda, aññatreva bhagavatā aññatra bhikkhusaṅghā uposathaṃ karissāmi saṅghakammāni cā’ti. | ‘Friend Ānanda, from today onwards irrespective of the Bhagavā and irrespective of the Order of the Bhagavā I will perform my own Uposatha and I will foster my own Order. |
Ajja, bhante, devadatto saṅghaṃ bhindissati, uposathañca karissati saṅghakammāni cā”ti. | Today, Bhante, Devadatta will split the Order, will perform his own Uposatha and foster his own Order.” |
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṃ viditvā tāyaṃ velāyaṃ imaṃ udānaṃ udānesi: | Then realizing its significance on that occasion, the Bhagavā expressed this solemn utterance: |
“Sukaraṃ sādhunā sādhu, | “Easy for the good to do what is beneficial, |
sādhu pāpena dukkaraṃ, | Difficult for the wicked to do what is good, |
Pāpaṃ pāpena sukaraṃ, | Easy for the wicked to do what is bad, |
pāpamariyehi dukkaran”ti. | For the Noble it is difficult to do what is bad.” |
