1.2.2 The Two Rare Individuals*

These two kinds of individuals, O' Bhikkhus, when arising in the world, they arise for the well-being of many, for the happiness of many, for the benefit, the welfare and happiness of many beings, of Gods and men.

Which are these two?

It is the Tathagata, who is an Arahant, a Sammasambuddha and the wheel-turning monarch. These two kinds of individuals, O' Bhikkhus, when arising in the world arise for the well-being of many, for the happiness of many, for the benefit, the welfare and happiness of many beings, of Gods and men.

These two kinds of individuals, O' Bhikkhus, when arising in this world, they arise as extraordinary men.

Which are these two?

It is a Tathagata, an Arahant, a Sammasambuddha and a wheel-turning monarch. These two kinds of individuals, O' Bhikkhus, when arising in this world, they arise as extraordinary men.

The passing of the two kinds of individuals, O' Bhikkhus, will be regretted by many people.

It is the passing of the Tathagata, an Arahant, a Sammasambuddha and the passing of the wheel turning monarch. These are the two kinds of individuals whose passing is regretted by many.
