“Yassa rukkhassa chāyāya, nisīdeyya sayeyya vā. Na tassa sākhaṃ bhañjeyya, mittadubbho hi pāpako. |
“In the shade of a tree One sits and sleeps, One should not even break the branch of that tree, Betraying a friend thus is wicked indeed. |
Yassa rukkhassa chāyāya, nisīdeyya sayeyya vā; Na tassa pattaṃ bhindeyya, mittadubbho hi pāpako”ti. |
In the shade of a tree One sits and sleeps, One should not even harm its leaves, Betraying a friend thus is wicked indeed.” |

“In the shade of a tree One sits and sleeps, One would even pull it out with the root, If it was for one’s welfare!” |
“Yassekarattimpi ghare vaseyya, yatthannapānaṃ puriso labhetha, Na tassa pāpaṃ manasāpi cintaye, kataññutā sappurisehi vaṇṇitā |
“If for one night one would stay in a house, where one was to obtain food and drink, Not any evil thought should arise in one’s mind against his host – it is gratitude that is praised by worthy men. |
Yassekarattimpi ghare vaseyya, annena pānena upaṭṭhito siyā. Na tassa pāpaṃ manasāpi cintaye, adubbhapāṇī dahate mittadubbhiṃ.2 |
If even for one night one would stay in a house, where one was to be served with food and drink. Not any evil thought should arise in one’s mind against his host – it is the hand that does not injure which burns those who deceive a friend. |
Yo pubbe katakalyāṇo, pacchā pāpena hiṃsati; Allapāṇihato poso,3 na so bhadrāni passatī’’ti |
Who received a wholesome deed previously and thereafter harms with wickedness, Is a man destroyed by a clean hand, he cannot see good fortune.” |
Ubbarivaggo, Petavatthupāḷi, Khuddakanikāye
1. Aṅkurapetavatthu: Aṅkura + peta + vatthu: Aṅkura + ghost + account.
2. adubbhapāṇī dahate:That very same hand that is not given to perform any harm, but on the other side has served (upaṭṭhito) with the good volition: ‘please take this, please eat this!’ then indeed BURNS in form of bad kammic results to be encountered by the one who has received such support and then intends to commit an evil deed to one’s benefactor.
3. allapāṇihato poso: ‘he is a clean hand destroyed man’ because the clean hand, that served him once, because of his performed wickedness now he is afflicted, his good kamma destroyed and such a one will not obtain, will not encounter happiness in this world nor in the next (Na so bhadrāni passatīti so yathāvuttapuggalo idhaloke ca paraloke ca iṭṭhāni na passati, na vindati, na labhatīti attho).
