The Result of Unwholesome and Wholesome Actions*

Cūḷakammavibhaṅasuttaṃ, Part One The Result of Unwholesome and Wholesome Actions

Idha, māṇava, ekacco itthī vā puriso vā pāṇātipātī hoti luddo lohitapāṇi hatapahate niviṭṭho adayāpanno pāṇabhūtesu.

Here, young man, a certain woman or man takes the life of living beings, is murderous, with hands full of blood, bent on violence and without sympathy for all beings.

So tena kammena evaṃ samattena evaṃ samādinnena kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapajjati.

Because one undertakes and performs such kind of actions after the breakage of the body, after death one reappears in the lower fields, in states of suffering, perdition and hell.

No ce kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapajjati, sace manussattaṃ āgacchati yattha yattha paccājāyati appāyuko hoti.

In case, after the breakage of the body, after death one does not reappear in the lower fields, in states of suffering, perdition and hell then one arrives in the human field, then wherever one appears, one will encounter a short life.

Appāyukasaṃvattanikā esā, māṇava, paṭipadā yadidaṃ

Such, young man, is the conduct that results in a short life:

– pāṇātipātī hoti luddo lohitapāṇi hatapahate niviṭṭho adayāpanno pāṇabhūtesu.

– one takes the life of living beings, is murderous, his hands full of blood, bent on violence, without sympathy for all beings.

Idha pana, māṇava, ekacco itthī vā puriso vā pāṇātipātaṃ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti nihitadaṇḍo nihitasattho,

Here, young man, a certain woman or a man rejects the killing of living beings, abstains from the taking of life. one dwells with stick and sword laid down,

lajjī dayāpanno sabbapāṇabhūtahitānukampī viharati.

modest, feels sympathy for their welfare and compassion towards all living beings.

So tena kammena evaṃ samattena evaṃ samādinnena kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapajjati.

Because one undertakes and performs such kind of actions after the breakage of the body, after death one reappears in the heavenly fields.

No ce kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapajjati, sace manussattaṃ āgacchati yattha yattha paccājāyati dīghāyuko hoti.

In case after the breakage of the body, after death one does not reappear in the heavenly fields, then one arrives in the human field, then wherever one appears, one will encounter a long life.

Dīghāyukasaṃvattanikā esā, māṇava, paṭipadā yadidaṃ –

Such, young man, is the conduct that results in longevity, that is:

pāṇātipātaṃ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti nihitadaṇḍo nihitasattho,

lajjī dayāpanno sabbapāṇabhūtahitānukampī viharati.

– one rejects the killing of living beings, abstains from the taking of life and lives with stick and

sword laid down, modest, feels sympathy for their welfare and compassion towards all living beings.

Idha, māṇava, ekacco itthī vā puriso vā sattānaṃ viheṭhakajātiko hoti, pāṇinā vā leḍḍunā vā daṇḍena vā satthena vā.

Here, young man, a certain woman or a man is harassing other beings with the hands, by stick, with stone or sword.

No ce kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapajjati, sace manussattaṃ āgacchati

In case after the breakage of the body, after death one does not reappear in the lower fields, in states of suffering, perdition and hell then one arrives in the human field,

yattha yattha paccājāyati bavhābādho hoti.

then wherever one appears, one will encounter a life full of illness.

Bavhābādhasaṃvattanikā esā, māṇava, paṭipadā yadidaṃ

– sattānaṃ viheṭhakajātiko hoti pāṇinā vā leḍḍunā vā daṇḍena vā satthena vā

Such, young man, is the conduct that results in a life full of illness:

– one harasses other beings with the hands, by stick, with stone or sword.

Idha pana, māṇava, ekacco itthī vā puriso vā sattānaṃ aviheṭhakajātiko hoti pāṇinā vā leḍḍunā vā daṇḍena vā satthena vā.

Here, young man, a certain woman or a man stays away from harassing other beings with the hands, by stick, with stone or sword.

So tena kammena evaṃ samattena evaṃ samādinnena kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapajjati.

Because one undertakes and performs such kind of actions after the breakage of the body, after death one reappears in heavenly fields.

No ce kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapajjati,

In case after the breakage of the body, after death one does not reappear in heavenly fields,

sace manussattaṃ āgacchati yattha yattha paccājāyati appābādho hoti.

then one arrives in the human field, then wherever one appears, one will encounter a healthy life.

Appābādhasaṃvattanikā esā, māṇava, paṭipadā yadidaṃ

Such, young man, is the conduct that results in a healthy life:

– sattānaṃ aviheṭhakajātiko hoti pāṇinā vā leḍḍunā vā daṇḍena vā satthena vā.

– one does not harass other beings with the hands, by stick, with stone or sword.

Idha, māṇava, ekacco itthī vā puriso vā kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo. Appampi vutto samāno abhisajjati kuppati byāpajjati patiṭṭhīyati kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti.

Here, young man, a certain person (woman or man) is often prone to anger and annoyance. If corrected even a little he gets equally angry, agitated, and obstinate and he rolls in anger, hatred and bitterness.

So tena kammena evaṃ samattena evaṃ samādinnena kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapajjati.

Because one undertakes and performs such kind of actions, after the breakage of the body, one reappears in the lower fields, in states of suffering, perdition and hell.

No ce kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā apāyaṃ duggatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayaṃ upapajjati, sace manussattaṃ āgacchati yattha yattha paccājāyati dubbaṇṇo hoti.

In case after the breakage of the body, one does not reappear in the lower fields, in states of suffering, perdition and hell then one arrives in the human field. Wherever one appears, one’s appearance will be ugly.

Dubbaṇṇasaṃvattanikā esā, māṇava, paṭipadā yadidaṃ

– kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo; appampi vutto samāno abhisajjati kuppati byāpajjati patiṭṭhīyati kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti.

Such, young man, is the conduct that results in unsightliness:

– one is often prone to anger and annoyance. If corrected even a little only one gets equally angry, agitated, obstinate and one rolls in anger, hatred and bitterness.

Idha pana, māṇava, ekacco itthī vā puriso vā akkodhano hoti anupāyāsabahulo; bahumpi vutto samāno nābhisajjati na kuppati na byāpajjati na patiṭṭhīyati na kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti.

Further, young man, a certain woman or a man is not prone to anger and annoyance. Even if criticized a lot one doesn’t turn equally angry, agitated, and obstinate and one does not roll in anger, hatred and bitterness.

So tena kammena evaṃ samattena evaṃ samādinnena kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapajjati.

Because one undertakes and performs such kind of actions after the breakage of the body, one reappears in higher fields, in heavenly spheres.

No ce kāyassa bhedā paraṃ maraṇā sugatiṃ saggaṃ lokaṃ upapajjati, sace manussattaṃ āgacchati yattha yattha paccājāyati pāsādiko hoti.

In case after the breakage of the body he does not reappear in higher fields, in heavenly spheres, then one arrives in the human world. Wherever one appears, one‘s appearance will be graceful.

Pāsādikasaṃvattanikā esā, māṇava, paṭipadā yadidaṃ

– akkodhano hoti anupāyāsabahulo; bahumpi vutto samāno nābhisajjati na kuppati na byāpajjati na patiṭṭhīyati na kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti.

Such, young man, is the conduct that results in beauty:

– one is not prone to anger and annoyance. Even if criticized a lot one does not turn angry, agitated, and obstinate and one doesn’t roll in anger, hatred and bitterness.
