Verse 143

अब्रह्मचरियातीतो,
कामभोगपरिच्चजो;
मारधीतामानदन्तो.
बुद्धं तं पणमाम्यहं.

Abrahmacariyātīto,
Kāmabhogapariccajo;
Māradhītāmānadanto.
Buddhaṃ taṃ paṇamāmyahaṃ.

I bow to the Buddha,
Completely untouched by carnal desires,
He was beyond all feelings of sexuality,
And thus had humbled the pride of Māra’s daughters.1

1. Māradhītāmānadanto: This refers to a situation five weeks after his enlightenment when Mara sent his beautiful ‘daughters’ to seduce the Buddha. They are personifications of impurities, named Ragā, Tanhā and Arati and thus present strong forces of Mara. Yet when they were unsuccessful the Buddha informed them that he was beyond temptations of all sense-pleasures.
