Paṭhamasāmaññasuttaṃ About Being a Sāmañña and the Fruits Thereof
Sāvatthinidānaṃ. This was laid down in Sāvatthi.
“Sāmaññañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi,
sāmaññaphalāni ca.
“I will teach you, Bhikkhus, what is recluseship
and what are the fruits of recluseship.
Taṃ suṇātha.
Katamañca, bhikkhave, sāmaññaṃ?
Therefore listen!
What, Bhikkhus, is recluseship?
Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo,
seyyathidaṃ– sammādiṭṭhi …pe…
sammāsamādhi.
It is this very Noble Eightfold Path,
which is right view, …
right concentration.
Idaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, sāmaññaṃ. This is, Bhikkhus, what is called recluseship.
Katamāni ca, bhikkhave, sāmaññaphalāni? What, Bhikkhus, are the fruits of recluseship?
Sotāpattiphalaṃ, sakadāgāmiphalaṃ,
anāgāmiphalaṃ, arahattaphalaṃ.
These are the fruit of entering the stream, the fruit of once-returning,
the fruit of non-returning and the fruit of becoming an arahant.
imāni vuccanti, bhikkhave, sāmaññaphalānī”ti. These, Bhikkhus, are the fruits of recluseship.”
